Welcome

The Person-centered Radiation Oncology Service Enhancement (PROSE) program is an initiative aimed to improve patient experience, housed at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre Radiation Oncology Department.

The PROSE program develops and supports QI programs that improve patient experience and research projects that help us learn how to improve patient experience.

Understanding patient experience is a key component to providing high quality, person-centered care.

Patient experience and person-centered care are two interrelated concepts within the illness journey.

What is person-centred care?

Person-centered care is “knowing the person behind the patient – as a human being with reason, will, feeling and needs – in order to engage the person as an active partner.

Person-centered care reflects a shift where each individual is seen as a person first, and as a patient second. This approach to care involves partnering with patients and healthcare professionals to:

  • Give patients a voice in the design and delivery of the care they receive
  • Enable patients to be more active in their journey in order to deliver better health outcomes and greater value through a wiser use of resources
  • Improve patient experience with their care and health outcomes

What is patient experience?

Patient experience is the sum of all interactions, shaped by an organization’s culture, that influence patient perceptions across the continuum of care.

Patient experience encompasses how patients feel when they interact within the healthcare system, such as how they perceive the care they receive from various healthcare professionals or how accessible information and support is to them. Patient experience includes a range of dimensions, including:

  • Access to care
  • Information and communication
  • Physical comfort
  • Emotional support
  • Patient preferences
  • Involvement of family and friends
  • Coordination of care
  • Continuity and transition

PROSE Projects

Person-centered care and patient experience combine to ensure that patients are receiving high quality care and service delivery.

PROSE projects aim to improve these two concepts through quality improvement and research activities. Our projects use measurement tools that collect information on patient experience, symptoms and/or quality of life.

Patient-reported experience measures (PREMs)

PREMs are self-reported by patients and are used to understand patients’ perspectives of their journey through the radiation oncology department.

Patient-reported outcomes measures (PROMs)

PROMs are self-reported by patients and are used to gather real time information on the patient’s health status and quality of life.

Quality Improvement (QI)

QI involves improving care for patients and practice for staff. QI projects include iterative processes to effectively improve various outcomes.
